Educating Healing Employing

Boys School

The Coulson Secondary School for boys is home to 150 children. It really is ‘home' for many of the children in its care who also live at the school. Almost 80% of the children are entirely funded by SANCHAT; most arrived from destitute families, many having been orphaned.

The school is run on the UK curriculum and is well-known for its educational achievements and is now a sought after school for children and families far outside the local area. The ethos is to impart ‘Whole Life' education so the children are as well equipped as possible for life beyond school. SANCHAT provides all the needs of the children at the school; clothing (the uniform is made in a workshop at the Coulsons), accommodation, education and food (a bakery has been set up at the Boys' school to bake bread for the schools and the Restart Centre).

Whilst the achievements of the children are outstanding there are many pressing demands for improvement.

The accommodation is very basic and cramped (there is no running hot water)

The facilities are inadequate; the science labs are basic without any of the essential equipment, there are few computers to assist learning and there are no sports facilities.

The teaching staff, whilst extremely dedicated, are poorly paid (or voluntary) as the school has no access to public funding.

SANCHAT needs help to not only fund the running of the school but for future development. Plans include assisting with tertiary education for future professionals and entrepreneurs and funding training in practical skills such as baking or building for the more practically gifted children.
